Dr David Slattery is an internationally fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specialising in complex pelvic, hip and knee surgery. His expertise includes anterior minimally invasive hip replacement, periacetabular osteotomy, hip arthroscopy, and the latest hip and knee replacement techniques.
Training and experience
Born and raised in Melbourne, David completed his medical degree with first-class honours at the University of Queensland in 2008, followed by internship and residency at The Alfred. He entered the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons orthopaedic training program in 2010, training across leading Victorian and Western Australian hospitals — including outreach work in remote Indigenous communities.
He went on to sub-specialise through fellowships in the UK, Switzerland, and Australia training in pelvic and acetabular trauma, hip preservation, arthroscopic hip surgery, and direct anterior hip replacement under world-leading surgeons. During this time he treated elite athletes, AFL players and international cricketers.
Approach to care
David offers a full range of open and arthroscopic techniques — from hip arthroscopy and pelvic osteotomy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), to joint replacement using 3D printing, robotic surgery, computer navigation, and both anterior and posterior approaches. Treatment is tailored to each patient’s individual needs.
Communication is central to his practice. David prides himself on being open and honest, keeping patients actively involved in every decision throughout their treatment journey. He also has published many scientific papers in orthopaedic journals, and he regularly hosts visiting surgeons, and mentors junior doctors.
Outside of work, David is with his three children — and when he’s not chasing after them, he’s likely out fishing.
